　英語で書かれた作品のアンソロジーです。ベーコン研究の第一人者の一人であるブライアン・ヴィッカーズ（BrianVickers）が、現在刊行中のオックスフォード版フランシス・ベイコン全集の編纂にそれなりの時間がかかることを見越して出版しました。彼はベーコンの英語著作がエリザベス朝時代の英語で書かれているために、現代の読者が理解するには注釈と語彙の解説を要すると考え、本書では『学問の進歩』や『信仰告白』、『随想集』、『ニュー・アトランティス』その他仮面劇等の英文による作品に対して、詳しい作品の解説と語句の註解を施しています。
